On Friday, July 4, a strategic meeting was held with UJAMI, one of the three consortiums currently deployed in GOMA, working jointly and in solidarity to build a Social Humanitarian Urban Network aimed at strengthening the population’s capacity to fight, each at their own level, against cholera and famine.
Around twenty people gathered, including online participants, with our founder Virginie Guignard Legros, to discuss actions to be implemented according to the protocols of ECOSYSTEM VLG World. It was a constructive discussion that also raised questions about additional complementary actions, particularly regarding sexual violence.
This marks an important step for ECOSYSTEM VLG World, which has spent the past five years building networks of trust to restore social cohesion in the same area. Violence is becoming increasingly normalized, gradually eroding the social fabric. Trust is turning into mistrust among everyone, creating negative ecosystems for raising children.
This new phase goes beyond trust networks. It aims to establish physical and visible presences on the ground—places already known to local residents—as points for reception, training, and information open to all without restriction, in order to tackle local challenges through the empowerment of communities.
Cholera is a dangerous disease known worldwide for hundreds of years. No cases are currently reported in Europe—fortunately—but it remains common in crisis zones such as North and South Kivu (in the DRC), a situation made worse by recent armed conflicts. An informed and trained family can regain its agency by limiting the spread through simple preventive actions.
The first step is the deployment of the UMAJI, MAISHA BORA, and HOPE consortiums across GOMA, a process already underway for several weeks and set to expand throughout the city in order to implement humanitarian social trust-building actions among the population.
We extend our sincere thanks to all UJAMI leaders present for their participation in our collaborative and solidarity-based programs.
